Lorenzo faced the women, thinking it would be easier to face the entire Mexican Army. Angie looked at him with a combination of confusion and frustration on her face, and Olivia glared at him so hard he could nearly feel her hate.
He took a moment to glance around the small basement, noting the cot in the corner, the collection of blankets and rags, the stacks of bagged vegetables, and the small heap of cured meats and cheeses. The women had obviously been busy.
“Have you seen enough?” Olivia snapped.
Lorenzo refocused his attention on the agitated sister and mentally debated what would be the best possible way to handle her. He decided honesty was probably the best—and only—sensible route to take with her. But he was going to need to throw her off her “shoot now, ask questions later” attitude.
Slowly, so as not to startle her, he pulled the gun from his waistband and placed it on the edge of a table—closer to Olivia than himself and took a step backwards.
Olivia eyed the weapon while gnawing on her lip, obviously tempted by the opportunity he had just placed in front of her.
“I stand in front of you as a Texian wearing a Mexican uniform,” Lorenzo said softly. “I have been a Texian for many years. Up until I was placed in a Mexican prison and all of my rebellions were quickly put to an end.”
Olivia’s eyes were slowly pulled off of the weapon and drawn to his face. Lorenzo gave a silent prayer of thanks. “When they began to pull the prisoners for duty in the army, I was placed in service. At first, I thought it could be a chance to escape. But then I heard rumors of some Texian activities that I might be able to help with—as a Mexican soldier. That is how I met Tom.”
Obviously thrown off by so many things suddenly being tossed at her, Olivia shook her head, a confused expression on her face. “You know Tom? How? I don’t understand.”
Lorenzo’s eyes clashed with Angie’s. He couldn’t read the expression on her face, and briefly wondered if she were going to be angry with him for a long time over their passionate kiss. Quickly, he pulled his eyes away. It shouldn’t matter. She shouldn’t matter.
Angie spoke up, answering Olivia’s questions. “I didn’t believe it either, Vi. That night I last went to see Tom, Lorenzo caught me at the river. I thought he had discovered the Texian camp and was spying on them. Seems he thought the same of me.” Olivia wouldn’t make eye contact with Angie, but Lorenzo watched Angie and saw a faint blush touch her cheeks. Was she remembering everything from that night? And, more importantly, was she remembering it with disgust or with pleasure? “But Tom knew him and confirmed his story,” Angie continued.
Olivia turned towards her. “Why didn’t you tell me? How could you have kept this a secret from me?”
Angie clasped her hands in front of her, and Lorenzo could tell she was battling her guilt.
